MILFORD SOUND LODGE
The Long Way Around - BEAR’s Guide to New Zealand’s South Island
Milford Sound Lodge is single handedly one of the best stays I’ve had. Staying in their newly renovated riverside chalets felt like the perfect synergy between the solitude of an off grid cabin, and the luxury of not having to lift a finger, that comes with a hotel stay. While being in one of the most remote places in New Zealand.
And the bed. I need to talk about the bed.
Not only does it look like this, sleeping here felt less like “going to sleep” and more like being gently absorbed into a cloud. The kind where your body melts into the mattress the second your head hits the pillow. Nine uninterrupted hours. Dead silence. Pitch black. No passing cars, no voices, no hum of the outside world - just deep, restorative rest. This is my idea of heaven.
The Lodge offered a service where you pop in your breakfast menu for the next day, and it turns up at your doorstep in the hands of their friendly staff. You then simply leave the empty box outside your door, and they collect it mid morning, while resetting the bed and giving the room a quick little spruce. We opted for fresh croissants, muffins, juice, and muesli - A+.
Last winter, Milford Sound Lodge upgraded their riverside chalets to include outdoor baths, and it feels like a perfectly considered addition. Quiet luxury that makes complete sense for the landscape. We ran the tub and set ourselves up with a little vino, before having a cheeky dip in the river right outside the chalets. Returning from the crispy cool ice bath in the middle of winter to a hot bath was delicious.
While Milford Sound offers no shortage of adventure, I truly can’t recommend allowing enough time to just be at the lodge. Trust me when I tell you the lodge is worth slowing down for. We dined at Pio Pio, the on-site restaurant championing local produce and simple, thoughtful flavours. We also took to the water with Mitre Peak Cruises - my second time cruising with them, and they remain exceptional - intimate, informative, and respectful of the environment.
Before leaving Milford Sound, Liam and I squeezed in a short trail run. The weather was miserable in the best possible way. The drizzle of rain settled in and made the forest look ethereal - like a fairy garden. Milford Sound wears bad weather beautifully - the moody skies, the mist, and the waterfalls that appear seemingly out of nowhere - the forest feels alive.
Milford Sound Lodge isn’t just somewhere to stay. It’s a place to rest properly, to disconnect fully, and to experience this part of the world in a way that feels both grounding and indulgent. Rare and memorable.
Stray beautiful,
BEAR.
